Please note; the addition of local anesthesia by infiltration in 2009 and possibly block in 2012 is a necessary expansion of scope. Plus it provides the continuity of care by an educated professional that has taken an extensive course and exam to be certified to administer anesthesia. Furthermore, there have NOT BEEN any increases in liability insurance in states with block anesthesia (some states have had this in place since the early 70s!). There has not been ONE CASE against an RDh performing local anesthesia. The RDH in MD can only perform infiltration currently on dental hygiene patients; we cannot administer to the dentist's patient for other procedures other than dental hygiene. If block passes it also can only be performed for dental hygiene procedures. All RDH's should carry their own liability insurance it costs $66 per year!!

My fellow RDH's and I all agree that adding administration of block anesthesia to the RDH scope of practice is not a good thing. Malpractice insurance rates are sure to rise. The DDS may also start to ask the RDH to numb patients for him/her if the doctor runs behind. There is no increase in pay for this added responsibility and cost to us. Our office, as well as many others, have been using Oraqix instead of local anesthetic with great success. What is the advantage to the RDH that works in a private practice setting??
